Culture

Cultural experiences are always enriching. A great variety of such experiences are to be had in Vysočina. Movie buffs will be thrilled by the annual International Documentary Film Festival, while music lovers will certainly appreciate the Peter Dvorský International Music Festival, the Music of Thousands – Mahler Jihlava and the Concentus Moraviae Festival. There is also a wide choice of regular historical festivals, cultural shows and multi-genre festivals to choose from.

Sights

Three of the dozen UNESCO heritage sites that are found in the Czech Republic are situated in the Vysočina Region – the Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk at Zelená hora in Žďár nad Sázavou, the historic town centre in Telč and the Basilica of St Procopius with the Jewish Quarter in Třebíč. These architectural marvels, which are situated about 40 km apart, regularly come alive with events packed with rich cultural and entertainment programmes. A great number of summer festivals, complete with jesters, fencers and musicians, recapture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages in local castles and castle ruins. You can gain new experiences and learn about history in an unconventional way while taking costumed tours, attending theatre performances and going on a mystery night tour of various chateaux.

Following in the footsteps of famous people

The Vysočina Region is a place where many important people were born and many of them worked. A number of famous painters, architects, writers and scientists were born in Vysočina and stayed tied to the region throughout their entire lives. Others discovered Vysočina during their travels and returned there on regular occasions to find inspiration in the beauty of this region. You too can travel across Vysočina and follow in the footsteps of Gustav Mahler, Jaroslav Hašek, J.A. Schumpeter and many other important figures.

Jewish heritage trails

We can come across Jewish settlement heritage in many places in Vysočina – single houses, town quarters and synagogues. You can admire them on three new trails, all of which connect these places of interest. The Jewish Quarter in Třebíč is truly unique as it is the only Jewish heritage site outside Israel that is inscribed on the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Beer trips

The beer industry and good beer have been flourishing in Vysočina for many centuries. Not only can you sample the products of twenty breweries (both large commercial and small family enterprises), but you can also see the production process, become the Head Brewer for a moment, brew your own batch of beer and enjoy taking a relaxing break in a beer spa. All this can be pleasantly coupled with one of the culture and food events that are traditionally organized by many of the breweries.

Experiences for everyone

Visitors can enjoy unconventional experiences in, for instance, a fairy-tale village, a fairy-tale realm, a Wild West town, a haunted chateau, a nuclear power station information centre and in Eden – paradise in Vysočina. Lovers of good food will also be delighted in Vysočina as many local restaurants promise exciting culinary experiences, during which you can try international cuisine as well as proper, traditional regional cuisine.

Adrenaline

Vysočina offers a wide range of adrenaline-fuelled activities that will make the blood in your veins run faster – airsoft, aqua zorbing, bumper ball, bungee running, land kiteboarding, paragliding, rope climbing centres, paintball, parachuting, snow-kiting, etc. A ride on a dog sled through the snowy landscape is a nice blend of romance and adrenaline.

On the world championship snow track

The race course used by contestants during the 2013 Biathlon World Championship is available for your use. You can cross-country ski on the track in winter, and you can use it for cycling and inline skating in summer.

Wellness

You can further boost the beneficial effects of the local area by choosing from among a wide range of wellness services, which include a great variety of massages, baths and other relaxation attractions, such as spending some time in a quiet room or a herb room.
